New surgical robot brings innovative orthopedic care close to home
Mayo Clinic Health System recently celebrated the first case performed with robotic arm assisted orthopedic surgery, and is the only health care provider offering these innovative procedures in the Coulee region.
These new and expanded orthopedic services are made possible with the introduction of the Mako surgical robot. Robotic arm assisted orthopedic surgery is used for partial and total knee replacements and total hip replacements. Currently, Orthopedics team members Kariline Bringe, M.D., Nathan Johnson, D.O., and Charles Nolte, D.O. are performing this procedure.
A computerized tomography (CT) scan taken before the surgery is used to plan exactly how much bone should be removed and to aid in maximizing the accuracy of the alignment and placement of the implant. During the surgery, the robotic arm ensures that this plan is followed exactly.
“We are excited to offer another differentiated service to patients in our market,” says Dr. Charles Nolte, Chair of Orthopedics at Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse. “The higher precision and enhanced accuracy of robotic – assisted orthopedic surgery allows our patients to leave the hospital sooner and heal faster.”
Mayo Clinic Health System Orthopedic services are also offered in Sparta, Onalaska,
La Crosse, and Prairie du Chien.
